Song of Solomon and the gospel
S of S 4:7
Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.

This is what Christ has made us, His bride. Love covers a multitude of sin. This is great, how could
this wear old and cold? It does
S of S 5:2-6
I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my
sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops
of the night. 3I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile
them? 4My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him. 5I
rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet
smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock. 6I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had
withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find
him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.

We’re tired! He comes to visit, knocks on the door and we’re too tired to get up and see him. This is
the same guy who used to make your heart leap. He doesn’t hang around forever, he leaves. Then
you’re left to find him
So of S 5:7-9
The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of
the walls took away my veil from me. 8I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my
beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love. 9(Daughters) What is thy beloved more than another
beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou
dost so charge us?

The bride is beaten because she wants to be with her man. She could have had him at rest, in peace
if she had woken up. But now she is forced to go out in the cruel world to find him where she will
get stomped. She tries to get help to find her man and the help says, “Why? What’s the big deal?
Plenty of fish in the sea.” But there’s no fish like this fish
S of S 5:10-16
My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand. 11His head is as the most fine gold,
his locks are bushy, and black as a raven. 12His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of
waters, washed with milk, and fitly set. 13His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his
lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh. 14His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his
belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires. 15His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets
of fine gold: his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars. 16His mouth is most sweet: yea,
he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.

The answer to finding more of Christ is not to think about you, it is to think about Him. When he is
explained to be as he is, others want to know more too
S of S 6:1
Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that
we may seek him with thee.

This must be quite the guy, we have to meet him too! The bride that was too sleepy to wake up for
him is still acceptable, love still covers sin. Chapter 7 he explains her beauty in detail. The result of
their mutual adoration of each other is sweet fellowship
So of S 7:10-13
I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me. 11Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field;
let us lodge in the villages. 12Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish,
whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.
13The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which
I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.

There is a beautiful exclusivity, a wonderful enjoyment of life together, with each other and no other.
Ephesians 2:4-7
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5Even when we were dead
in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
6And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7That in
the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through
Christ Jesus.

Romans 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

This is the Gospel and this is the foundation of marriage. If you don’t get the Gospel your marriage
will not work.
Ephesians 5:31-33
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two
shall be one flesh. 32This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
33Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see
that she reverence her husband.
