Isaiah 42
Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighted [satisfied with]; I
have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.

He belongs to God, He is strengthened and protected by God, He is the source of God’s
delight, He has God’s Spirit and He brings justice to Gentiles
Isaiah 42:2
2He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.

He is not a loud guy, screaming about Himself, trying to draw attention or argue. No spiking the
ball in the end zone.
Isaiah 42:3
3A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth
judgment unto truth.

He is gentle to those who are broken or breaking and the result of His action is judgment and
truth, there is no injustice with his dealings, he strengthens and rekindles
John 1:17--law was given by Moses--came through him, it was not his own. Grace and truth
came by Jesus--it was his and showed up with Him, what the Law only typified, Christ brought.
Moses smashes tablets, frustrated by not listening to the words He brought; Jesus is gentle as he
is grace in the flesh
Isaiah 42:4
4He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall
wait for his law.

He knows His job, His security lies in a safe place not effected by men or the world and He will
make the whole earth trust or hope in His word.
Isaiah 42:5-7
5Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that
spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people
upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and
will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of
the Gentiles; 7To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that
sit in darkness out of the prison house.

LORD--Yahweh, Jehovah, the I AM, the covenant keeping God. God, the Creator, is with
Him and He will be a covenant--He is the one mediator that we need! Gentiles will come, blind
will see, deaf will hear and prisoners will be set free.
Isaiah 42:8
8I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to
graven images.

If the servant has God’s glory and God does not give His glory to another, the servant must be
God!
Isaiah 42:13
The LORD shall go forth as a mighty man, he shall stir up jealousy like a man of war: he shall
cry, yea, roar; he shall prevail against his enemies.

Here the Messiah cries aloud! Cry here is to give an alarm, cry earlier was to shriek! He is a
man of war who strongly defeats his enemies.
Isaiah 42:25
Therefore He hath poured upon him the fury [heat] of His anger, and the strength of battle: and
it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

One He refers to the Messiah the other he refers to the nation.
The Messiah you get depends on who you are!
Psalm 76:9
When God arose to judgment, to save all the meek of the earth.

In His first coming He was meek and mild, for the most part. But he showed his wrath when he
cleansed the temple, in his frustration with the lack of belief by obstinate people. The Messiah is
gentle to those who need gentleness--the meek. He is strong to those who think they have
power--the proud.
Matthew 11:28-30
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke
upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your
souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

Meek--gentle. Lowly--depressed, humiliated, of low degree
Matthew 12 then goes into disciples getting busted by Pharisees for picking corn and Jesus
healing a man on the Sabbath day.
Matthew 12:17-21 quotes Isaiah 42:1-3

We become like Christ--fruit of the Spirit--longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, meekness.
What does meekness look like? Are we timid? Afraid? Cowering in the corner?
Isaiah 51:12,13
I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that
shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; And forgettest the LORD thy
maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast
feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to
destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?

Being afraid of people is not humility, it is pride, it is forgetting that God is bigger than men.

The Bible is consistent that believers, those in Christ, help the poor and the needy, are
continually giving and serving, esteeming others better than themselves, we work so we have to
give. We do this because that is who Christ is. We don’t because we are afraid. We are
ashamed of the Gospel and of befriending those who are helpless.

Let’s not forget who our Savior is. Who we are in Him.
Philippians 2:1-8
If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the
Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, 2Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love,
being of one accord, of one mind. 3Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in
lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.
4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5Let this
mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not
robbery to be equal with God: 7But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form
of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8And being found in fashion as a man, he
humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
