Isaiah 61
Luke 4:16-22
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into
the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17And there was delivered unto
him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place
where it was written, 18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to
preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance
to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19To
preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the
minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on
him. 21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22And all
bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And
they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

It’s one thing to read prophecy, it is quite another to say you fulfill it. They know this kid, they
watched him grow up, he thinks he fulfills Isaiah? He’s nuts!
Quotation from Isaiah 61:1-2
The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good
tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the
captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; 2To proclaim the acceptable
year of the LORD,

Messiah’s job will be to restore Israel, those in bondage, deliverance has come to the beaten,
despised, poor nation.
Notice he left out a bit
and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
This relates to his second coming so he did not claim to fulfill it at that time.
Isaiah 61:4-7
And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall
repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. 5And strangers shall stand and feed
your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers. 6But ye
shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall
eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. 7For your shame ye
shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they
shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.

There is a restoration coming when Israel will be served and honored by Gentiles. They
received double punishment for their sin, but they will get double reward as well--everlasting
joy. It’ll be awesome! Obviously this has not happened yet!
Isaiah 61:10-11
I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me
with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a
bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
11For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in
it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all
the nations.

The Messiah is clothed in righteousness and His aim is to make righteousness reign on earth.
Not only will the land physically bring forth life, but righteousness itself will bud.
Ephesians 4:17-20
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk,
in the vanity of their mind, 18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of
God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19Who being
past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with
greediness. 20But ye have not so learned Christ;

Living in sin, continuing in darkness, walking in ignorant spiritual blindness is not why we are in
Christ! This is not the lesson to learn from Christ.
Ephesians 4:21-24
21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22That
ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the
deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man,
which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Although Christ has not fulfilled all aspects of the New Covenant, all the spiritual aspects are
done and ready for us. We have put off the old, tattered clothing of bondage and poverty and
put on the shining white robes of righteousness. This is what it means to be taught in Christ--
righteousness shines forth from our lives. Christ teaches us a new way of life, just as we learned
our old way, we learn the new way.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the
righteousness of God in him.

This is who we are in Christ because Christ is clothed in righteousness. Why put off this for the
garments of sin?
