Pastor's Sermon Notes

Jeremiah 6:13
For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness;
and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.
Covetousness--the wanting of physical things always leads people away from God, it effected
the leaders and the followers and led them all to ruin.
Jeremiah 6:14
They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace;
when there is no peace.
While the ruin comes, the covetous leaders tell them everything is OK, eat, drink and be merry.
If the people ended their sin they’d have to quit theirs too! No one wants that!
Jeremiah 6:15
Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed,
neither could they blush: therefore they shall fall among them that fall: at the time that I visit them
they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
When you benefit from your sin and you enjoy it thoroughly, there is nothing to be ashamed of,
until the end when judgment comes.
Jeremiah 6:16
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the
good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not
walk therein.
Words expressed of travelers who lose the right way. Find the right way and go there, there
was a time in Israel when they walked rightly with God. Find it and go that way.
Jeremiah 7:23,24
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall
be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto
you. 24But they hearkened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in the counsels and in the
imagination of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.
Their covenant was pretty straightforward--listen to God and you’ll be fine. No one wants to
listen to God so they listen to their own heart, and they slide further back from God.
Jeremiah 7:25-27
Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even
sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:
26Yet they hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck: they did
worse than their fathers. 27Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will
not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.
They didn’t listen to God so Jeremiah should not expect them to listen to him.
God’s Word contains hard truth, it is much easier to listen to your heart, but you hart is evil and
God is still the Judge.
Matthew 23--list of woes against religious leaders in Jerusalem wraps up with 37-39
37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto
thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her
chickens under her wings, and ye would not! 38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh
in the name of the Lord.
There is punishment for Jerusalem’s sins and their past, but there is also restoration. God can
save even the vilest of rebels.
Romans 15:18,19
For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to
make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, 19Through mighty signs and wonders, by the
power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully
preached the gospel of Christ.
Paul preached to Gentiles all around but he also preached from Jerusalem the Gospel, even
though Jerusalem is rejected, the Gospel is still preached there.
Romans 15:25,26
But now I go unto Jerusalem to minister unto the saints. For it hath pleased them of Macedonia
and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem.
Paul desires to return to Jerusalem. Things are still bad for believers in Christ in Jerusalem, it
hasn’t gotten any easier to be a follower of God there, so they send them help.
Romans 15:30-32
Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit,
that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me; 31That I may be delivered from
them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be
accepted of the saints; 32That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with
you be refreshed.
Paul desires to make it to Jerusalem to share the gift. The worse off a place is the more glorying
there will be when God works there. We may live in a corrupt place but the Gospel always
reigns and is available for any individual who would come and take it.
