Pastor's Sermon Notes

Isaiah 66:1
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the
house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
God is awesome, much more awesome than us. He sits in heaven and rests his feet on this earth
that is the center of our awareness. There is no way to contain Him. What hope do we have to
approach such a great God?
Isaiah 66:2--here’s your hope
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to
this man will I look, even to him that is poor (humble) and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at
my word.
We have no right for God to pay attention to us, He doesn’t need us. But he will look on the
man who humbly fears Him and shakes at hearing His Word.
Isaiah 66:3,4
He that killeth an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's
neck; he that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burneth incense, as if he
blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their
abominations. 4I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because
when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine
eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
If you are going your own way you are not fearing the Lord. If you continue in your sin and find
no problem with it, or find justification why it’s not so bad, you are not humbly fearing the Word
of God. What is the result for those who stay in that way?
Isaiah 66:15,16
For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his
anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For by fire and by his sword will the LORD
plead with (judge) all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.
Fiery judgment is coming. DO we tremble at this or chalk it up as Hollywood scare tactics? Do
we believe this? Does it scare the sin out of us? There is a choice
Isaiah 66:22-24
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the
LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. 23And it shall come to pass, that from one
new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before
me, saith the LORD. 24And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that
have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched;
and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
There is your choice--be one of those whom God blesses to be with Him for eternity or be one
of those whom He consumes for eternity. Your humility in hearing His Word is what makes the
difference.
Acts 7:48-54--Stephen’s sermon before his death at the hands of the Jews
Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
49Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord:
or what is the place of my rest? 50Hath not my hand made all these things? 51Ye stiffnecked
and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so
do ye. 52Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them
which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers
and murderers: 53Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.
54When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their
teeth.
7:32--Moses heard God and trembled. 9:6--Saul heard God and trembled. Stephen recounts
Jewish history of killing guys who tell them about God. They killed the prophets, continued in
their way and eventually killed the Messiah, whom all the prophets spoke of. This is their
testimony and their response is the same--Kill him!
Romans 4:21-25--context--Abraham’s justification by faith
And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23Now it was not written for his sake
alone, that it was imputed to him; 24But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe
on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25Who was delivered for our offences,
and was raised again for our justification.
We too are justified, made righteous by faith. If we believe that Jesus was killed for our offenses
and raised up for our justification. We can die in judgment, or we can let Christ take it for us.
1 Thessalonians 1:10--Jesus rose from the dead and delivers us from the wrath to come
Romans 5:1,2
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2By
whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the
glory of God.
This humble faith that depends on God, not self-effort or self-worth, allows a man to have
access to God! We can stand in His presence! This is grace.
