Pastor's Sermon Notes

Jeremiah 21,22--Jeremiah tells Judah and Jerusalem that Babylon is coming. If they want to die,
stay and fight them; if they want to live be taken captive by them.
Jeremiah 23--false prophets keep telling the people that they are fine, God does not like false
prophets
Jeremiah 23:18-20
For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who
hath marked his word, and heard it? 19Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury,
even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. 20The anger of
the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his
heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.

God is angry with sin, unleashing His fury is in his heart.
Jeremiah 23:22-24
But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they
should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings. 23Am I a God at
hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off? 24Can any hide himself in secret places that I
shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.

God judges evil, so evil people must be warned because God knows what we are doing, who
we are.
Jeremiah 23:28,29
The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my
word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD. 29Is not my word like as a
fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

God’s Word will burn people up. It smashes people to bits. Jerusalem is about to find that out
for themselves.
The problem is not that God is uncommunicative, the problem is that we don’t hear.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Does the Word of God impact you
like fire or a hammer? If not, it’s simply because we don’t hear it.
Hebrews 5--all about how Melchizadek is a type of Christ
Hebrews 5:10-14
Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. 11Of whom we have many things
to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
There is great stuff here, but he can’t say it because he knows his audience can’t handle it. They
are dull of hearing--O’Hare airport and cows
Hebrews 5:12
12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which
be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not
of strong meat. 13For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he
is a babe.

Being a baby is not a problem, when you are a baby! Milk is good for babies, they need to
learn to handle that before steak. If they are exercised by the milk, one day they can eat steak.
We should have a desire for steak.
Hebrews 5:14
14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have
their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

When you hear God’s word you hear the meat and this produces growth. What do we need to
be sharper in hearing? More education? Better mental faculties? Newer translations in our
language? NO!
We need moral alertness, our senses aware to know good and evil. The same thing --Jeremiah
said--this is a foolish people who are wise in evil but ignorant concerning good.
If you struggle with meaty doctrines--election, suffering, atonement, etc, it’s not because they
are too complicated, it’s because you are too wrapped up in your sin! Men love darkness and
flee the light--the Word.
Start with milk then move on to meat
Hebrews 6:1--leave the foundational principles and move on to the meat!
Jeremiah 23:5,6--here’s some milk, drink it then move on to meat.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a
King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
6In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he
shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

He knows your sin, so your only recourse is to be righteous. But the only righteousness that
saves you is His righteousness, the Lord OUR righteousness. His righteousness is imputed to us.
