Jeremiah 27:2
Thus saith the LORD to me; Make thee bonds and yokes, and put them upon thy neck,
Jeremiah has a visible illustration of captivity. Israel, and any other nation in the region that
wishes to survive, should willingly place themselves in subjection to Babylon
Jeremiah 27:8
And it shall come to pass, that the nation and kingdom which will not serve the same
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king
of Babylon, that nation will I punish, saith the LORD, with the sword, and with the famine, and
with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.
Anyone who does not serve Babylon will get nailed by God and Babylon
Jeremiah 27:11
But the nations that bring their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, those
will I let remain still in their own land, saith the LORD; and they shall till it, and dwell therein.
Jeremiah 27:14,15
Therefore hearken not unto the words of the prophets that speak unto you, saying, “Ye shall not
serve the king of Babylon:” for they prophesy a lie unto you. 15For I have not sent them, saith
the LORD, yet they prophesy a lie in my name; that I might drive you out, and that ye might
perish, ye, and the prophets that prophesy unto you.
The false message that the prophets are bringing should be ignored. God will nail them and their
prophets if they don’t do what God says.
Jeremiah 28:10
Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah's neck, and brake it.
The false prophet wants nothing to do with Jeremiah and his little yoke illustration
Jeremiah 28:13
Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but
thou shalt make for them yokes of iron.
Wood is gone, lasting judgment is coming and Hananiah will illustrate it with his own life.
Jeremiah 28:16,17
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year
thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD. 17So Hananiah the
prophet died the same year in the seventh month.
God allowed false prophets to teach so God could execute judgment on rebels. Hananiah took
him up on the offer.
--God likes to test His people!
Jeremiah 17:10--I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according
to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.
1 Thessalonians 2:3,4
For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: 4But as we were
allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but
God, which trieth our hearts.
Those who preach the Gospel are tempted all the time to compromise, God tests the heart
1 Peter 1:6-9
Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through
manifold temptations: 7That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that
perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the
appearing of Jesus Christ: 8Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him
not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9Receiving the end of your
faith, even the salvation of your souls.
The fruit of the test of our faith is a knowledge of salvation and a great, lasting joy
James 1:2-4
My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3Knowing this, that the trying
of your faith worketh patience. 4But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect
and entire, wanting nothing.
God’s tests are to weed out the false professors and build up the true believers.
1 Corinthians 11:17-19
Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better,
but for the worse. 18For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be
divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19For there must be also heresies among you, that
they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
Acceptable, has passed the test of genuineness.
2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly
dividing the word of truth.
Study--be diligent, exertion to pass the test. application is not to study the word, we diligently
pursue being pleasing to God, this is done by rightly using God’s Word.
