Pastor's Sermon Notes

Jeremiah 33:14-16
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have
promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah. 15In those days, and at that time,
will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment
and righteousness in the land. 16In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell
safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.
The full realization of the New Covenant is to benefit Israel and Judah, their full restoration,
everything God had promised for them. This is only possible if the Lord Himself comes to reign.
It is the Lord’s righteousness, through the Messiah, that accomplishes this end.
Jeremiah 33:17-18
For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of
Israel; 18Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and
to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
This gives further insight into who the Messiah will be--a king and a priest. Two of the OT types
or pictures of Christ, that’s why God went through all the business of having these things back
then, to illustrate just who Christ is and allow Him to receive glory through all human failure.
1 Samuel 8:5-7
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king
to judge us like all the nations. 6But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king
to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. 7And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken
unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but
they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
The people were not supposed to want a king, they were supposed to want God. They want a
man to follow, not God.
The people were supposed to want a priest, but instead they killed many priests
Lamentations 4:13,14
For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just
in the midst of her, 14They have wandered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted
themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments.
Lamentations 4:16
The anger of the LORD hath divided them; he will no more regard them: they respected not the
persons of the priests, they favoured not the elders.
The human forms of the king and priests failed Israel. Kings are sinners, they mess up and the
nation suffers as a result. The priests sin, they are unclean, they lose respect in the sight of the
people and the people don’t listen any more.
These things were not supposed to work, they were pictures of God’s fullness and ministry
which He carries out perfectly. Spiritually speaking, Christ fulfills these functions for us now. He
is the Priest and King of all believers.
1 Timothy 1:17
Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever
and ever. Amen.
1 Timothy 6:15,16
Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and
Lord of lords; 16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach
unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
2 Timothy 2:11,12
It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him:
12If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:
Believers are said to be in the Kingdom of His dear Son. We are citizens of heaven, where
Christ currently is King. This is why we are to be careful with patriotism, getting entangled with
the affairs of the world, this is not our home, our Kingdom is not of this earth.
Not only does Christ fulfill the King role, He fulfills the priestly role as well.
Hebrews 4:14-16
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of
God, let us hold fast our profession. 15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched
with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find
grace to help in time of need.
Jesus Christ was human, He can relate to us and us to Him, but He was without sin, the only
human fully able to help us in our time of need.
Hebrews 7:1--He is like Melchizadek--a king and a priest, He’s everything we need. Because
He is all we need, we need no human to help us get to God. The New Covenant is marked by a
lack of concern for earthly things. God became human to help us approach, let us approach
with confidence, knowing that this is why Christ did all that!
