Proverbs and Women
Three parts on Proverbs and Women
1) The two women: wisdom and folly
Proverbs 5:1-6
My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding: 2That thou mayest regard
discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge. 3For the lips of a strange woman drop as an
honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: 4But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-
edged sword. 5Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. 6Lest thou shouldest ponder
the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.

Some women are fools and they set about to kill men. They don’t kill them through hostility but by
control. Women who change their minds all the time are showing you their folly. In contrast there is
wisdom:
Proverbs 8:22,23
The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

Wisdom doesn’t change its mind. It’s been the same forever, that’s what makes it wisdom--it’s
based in eternal truth: God.
Proverbs 8:32-36
Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. 33Hear
instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. 34Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at
my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. 35For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain
favour of the LORD. 36But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me
love death.

Wisdom stays the same, it’s a solid foundation and it leads to life. Women have a choice: be a
woman who kills men or brings men to life. Many women whine about the sad state of manhood
these days. Yup.
2) Proverbs about Women
Proverbs 11:16
A gracious woman retaineth honour: and strong men retain riches.

A gracious spirit, one that is gentle, looking to do for others makes a woman honorable
Proverbs 11:22
As a jewel of gold in a swine's snout, so is a fair woman which is without discretion (judgment or
understanding).

Proverbs 12:4
A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his
bones.

A lazy, whiny wife brings old age early to a man
Proverbs 14:1
Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.

Wise women build their house on the firm foundation of God’s righteousness and wisdom, there is
no violence or ruining, only strength
Proverbs 21:9
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
Proverbs 21:19
It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman.
Proverbs 25:24
It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.
Proverbs 27:15
A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

Rebellious, argumentative, control seeking, angry, violent women make life sheer misery, even
constituting torture
3) Proverbs 31 the passage that fills women with guilt or some with justification
Proverbs 31:10
Who can find a virtuous (thrifty and devoted, dependable, capable, energetic, dignified) woman? for
her price is far above rubies.

It is possible that the preacher is setting up an impossible case to prove his very point. Here’s his idea
of a virtuous woman
Proverbs 31:11-
11The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12She will
do him good and not evil all the days of her life. 13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly
with her hands. 14She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. 15She riseth also
while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. 16She
considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 17She girdeth
her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

The virtuous woman brings things into the house that are helpful, she is not busy spending what is in
the house on things of little to no value. She is busy and non-whiny about it. Her motivation is her
man and her house.

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. 19She layeth her
hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. 20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea,
she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all
her household are clothed with scarlet. 22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is
silk and purple. 23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.

The woman was created as the helper for the man. You can fight it til your grave but it’s still true.
When a woman does her job her husband is elevated to positions of respect and treated respectfully.
If you are bashing your man he won’t get there.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. 25Strength and
honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. 26She openeth her mouth with
wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. 27She looketh well to the ways of her household,
and eateth not the bread of idleness. 28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also,
and he praiseth her. 29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

If your kids and husband don’t call you blessed, bless you, speak with honor, respect, favorably you
aren’t this here woman.

Proverbs 31:30-31
30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

The fear of the Lord is necessary for a godly man and a godly woman. As a married woman your job
in life, what you will stand before God and give an account for is this: did you help your husband?
Go home and ask your husband what he wants you to do. Then do it in the Fear of the Lord. As a
single woman, if you fear the Lord your life will reflect it and godly men will show up! If they aren’t
showing up, there’s a reason why. Godly women are more precious than anything else on earth, men
won’t pass it up!
